A murder suspect who was the target of a week-long manhunt in northern England is dead after shooting himself during a standoff with police.

Raul Moat, 37, turned a shotgun on himself following a six-hour siege as officers moved to arrest him early Saturday on a riverbank in the town of Rothbury, police said.

A BBC producer reported she heard two shots. Moat was taken to a hospital in Newcastle, about 50 kilometres away.

"We can now confirm that Raul Moat died in hospital early this morning," police said in a statement.

The former bodybuilder and nightclub bouncer was wanted for allegedly wounding his ex-girlfriend, Samantha Stobbart, and killing her new boyfriend, Chris Brown, 29. He was also accused of wounding a police officer in a patrol car on July 4.

Moat reportedly said in a letter published in a newspaper that he would "keep killing police until I'm dead."
