Iraqi police and hospital officials say a suicide bomber has attacked a Shiite mosque north of Baghdad, killing eight people.

The officials say 18 people were injured in the Thursday evening attack in the city of Balad Ruz, 70 kilometres north of Baghdad.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Sunni militants have often targeted Shiite mosques as a way to incite sectarian violence.

The officials did not want to be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
