At least 89 people are dead after a storm demolished thousands of mud huts in northeastern India.

Hundreds of people in West Bengal and Bihar states were reportedly injured by the storm, which hit Tuesday night in northeastern parts of the states.

Officials said the storm, which packed winds of more than 160 kilometres per hour, destroyed about 50,000 huts in West Bengal and another 1,000 huts in Bihar.

It left trees uprooted, and snapped electrical and telephone lines.

The collapse of a prison wall in Bihar's Araria district forced the shift of more than 600 inmates to another prison, said state official N. Shravan Kumar.
