A tour bus carrying mainly Dutch tourists crashed on a road near Barcelona late Thursday, killing six passengers and injuring dozens.

"There are six dead and about 40 injured in eight hospitals in and around Barcelona," Dutch foreign ministry spokesman Herbert Brinkman said Friday afternoon.

"Identification has not yet been finalized, but all of those killed and injured are believed to be Dutch," said Brinkman.

The 67 people aboard were returning from a day trip to Barcelona, he said. Reports of the number injured varied from 36 to 44.

The bus veered off a road near San Pol de Mar Thursday night, local media reported. It then hit another car before overturning. It is not immediately clear what caused the crash.

The Spanish bus driver was seriously injured. The manger of the bus firm Plenacosta told the El Mundo newspaper his blood alcohol level was below the legal limit.
