At least 29 children have been killed in a fire that spread from a warehouse to a daycare in the northern Mexican city of Hermosillo, a government official says.

Prosecutors spokesman Jose Larrinaga told the Televisa television network that dozens more have been taken to hospital.

Larrinaga says the fire started at a car and tire depot and spread to the daycare.

Guadalupe Ayala, co-ordinator of Red Cross rescue workers, said about 100 children were in the daycare centre when it caught fire, but didn't say how many were killed.

The children ranged in age from six months to five years old.
