Winter is here: 13 scenes from the season's 1st snowfalls

Toronto woke up to the first snowfall of the season Tuesday morning, but the white stuff has been falling in cities around the world for weeks. Here is a look at 10 snowy scenes from the first dumps of winter.

25 centimetres of snow already

Edmontonians are already battling mountains of snow and it's a similar story in parts of Manitoba, where the ditches of the Trans Canada were littered with cars earlier this month.

More than 200 pieces of equipment hit city roads in Edmonton overnight to clear 25 cm of snow. (CBC)

First snow in TO

The start of winter in southern Ontario was much different this year than last, when early predictions of a colder-than-average season turned out to be true. (Remember the polar vortex?)

But Torontonians woke up to their first snowy commute this morning, meaning winter has undeniably arrived.

Early season opening in the West

Winter got off to an early start in the alpine areas of the West, where the stoke was high among these early season skiers at Whistler.

Going for one last ride

In Europe, the first snows in southeast France didn't stop these cyclists from getting in one last ride near the village of Le Bessat, in the mountains between Lyon and Saint-Etienne, on Nov. 22.

Austrians keen to ski

In Austria, these cross-country skiers were so keen on winter they flocked to this artificial slope to get their thigh burn on in the western village of Seefeld on Nov. 5. In the Austrian alpine, it was a different story with the fully snow-draped summits of the Tyrolian Stubaier glacier enticing downhill skiers as early as Oct. 21.

A careful commute in Krakow

Winter came early in Poland, too, where drivers in Krakow had snow to contend with on the morning drive on Oct. 12.

Great white Wall

Visitors to the Great Wall of China had to tread carefully on the attraction's many steps made slippery by ice and snow on Nov. 23. In Beijing, the main international airport was blanked a day earlier as the first snows of the season swept across Asia, grounding flights and disrupting traffic.
