1. Seaman's kiss

There were loud cheers when Master Seaman Francis Legare embraced his partner, Corey Vautour, after more than eight months at sea. In what is believed to be a first for the Royal Canadian Navy, that time-honoured ceremonial kiss was between two men. Sometimes a kiss is more than just a kiss. Here are some others.

2. Departure kiss

This military couple snuck a kiss under the bow of HMCS Preserver before the ship and crew departed Halifax in October 2001. Three Canadian warships, including the Preserver, left Halifax to join the U.S.-led coalition fighting against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

3. VJ Day kiss 

One of the most iconic kiss images is Alfred Eisenstadt's picture of a sailor kissing a nurse in New York City's Times Square at the end of the Second World War, an event Eisenstadt photographed for Time Life Magazine.

After a police charge during the Vancouver Stanley Cup riot of June 15, 2011, Scott Jones took a moment to calm his girlfriend, Alex Thomas. The image of tenderness amid the mayhem attracted attention around the world.
