Stephen Harper announces support for P.E.I. 2014 celebrations
Prime Minister Stephen Harper was in Charlottetown Thursday to announce federal support for P.E.I. 2014, the 150th anniversary celebrations of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference that preceded Confederation.
Harper made the announcement at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. He also toured Province House, the historic building where the Fathers of Confederation negotiated a union of provinces that led to the nation of Canada.
Harper's speech, with school children providing the backdrop, was a mini-history lesson on the role the province played in the lead-up to Confederation.
According to a news release from the Department of Canadian Heritage, the federal government will provide a total of $6.1 million through Canadian Heritage's Commemorate Canada program and Canada Cultural Spaces Fund and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
