Canadian director Denis Villeneuve is prepping the sequel to Blade Runner, one of his favourite movies of all time.

The director of dark, intense dramas Enemy, Prisoners, Incendies and Polytechnique was approached to shoot a long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott's landmark science fiction saga, which will see original star Harrison Ford return in a key role.

Villeneuve revealed a few details about the Blade Runner 2 project in Toronto, where he is promoting his new Mexican drug cartel thriller Sicario.

The Toronto International Film Festival continues through Sept. 20.
