MacIsaac sues newspaper over alleged racist label

HALIFAX - Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac is suing the Ottawa Citizen , claiming the newspaper characterized him as a racist.

The paper reported that MacIsaac made comments about Asian women spreading SARS at a May 1st show at an Ottawa club.

"Essentially the problem that Ashley had with that article is that it plain and simply brands him as a racist," David Perlmutter, MacIsaac's Halifax lawyer told the Halifax Chronicle-Herald.

Perlmutter said the controversial fiddler was trying to use sarcasm to attack the attitudes people have about SARS.

The Manitoba Lottery Corporation cancelled two upcoming Ashley concerts set in a Winnipeg casino after learning about MacIsaac's remarks.

MacIsaac is scheduled to headline Toronto's July 1st Canada Day celebrations.
