Brian Wilson will be honoured for lifetime achievement at the upcoming North by Northeast festival in Toronto.

The pop music icon and Beach Boy founder, credited as one of the creators of the distinctive "California sound," will receive the inaugural Now Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award on June 16.

The new award celebrates "individuals in the arts who have changed the world through their work," organizers said in a statement Tuesday.

"Few musicians have ever had as huge an impact on popular music as Brian Wilson and his unique contributions continue to resonate today."

Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy will host the ceremony honouring Wilson. The evening event will be free and open to the public.

Wilson is slated to perform at Toronto's historic Massey Hall two days later, as part of the Canadian tour backing his latest album, Brian Wilson Re-imagines Gershwin.

A wide range of artists — unsigned, indie and established — representing multiple genres will take to stages across downtown Toronto for the annual music and media festival including Shad, Devo, Stars, The Pharcyde, Braids and Men Without Hats.

North by Northeast runs June 13-19.
