Ellis, 19, had been drafted by the Nashville Predators but on Tuesday it was announced he would not have a place on the NHL team's bench this season, and would instead return to Windsor.

Ellis, a defenceman, played for the Spits as the club won the Memorial Cup in 2009 and again in 2010.

"Well I think arguably he's the best player in the CHL, he's huge for our team, he's a natural leader, he can play huge minutes for us," said Spits coach Bob Jones.

"This is obviously the biggest move we've had coming back thus far."
