A new fire station to serve east Windsor is closer to completion, according to Windsor Fire and Rescue Services Chief Bruce Montone.

It's under construction near the intersection of Lauzon Road and Lauzon Parkway, south of the current fire station, which is also on Lauzon Road, but closer to Riverside Drive.

The existing No. 7 station was built in the 1950's and cannot accommodate new equipment.

Montone said the modern hall will serve the east-side community better:

"Staff are certainly going to be provided for in a safer manner than what exists in the old station," the chief said.

Staff will be able to service their equipment and conduct training better, he said.

"The station's also going to serve as place where the neighbourhood can go in times of crisis because it's going to have 24-hour power and all of those things that some of our old infrastructure just didn't have," Montone said.

The chief expects the new fire station to be finished by the end of the month. Moving would take place in February.

The cost of the new hall is more than $2.5 million dollars.
