Mayor threatens to revoke $10M pledge to university

Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis has threatened to revoke the city's $10-million pledge to the University of Windsor's proposed downtown facilities.

Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis threatened to revoke the city's $10-million pledge to the University of Windsor's proposed downtown facilities.

Francis said on Wednesday the money may not be available much longer if the university does not start the redevelopment of the Windsor Armouries, the future home of the university's school of music and school of visual arts.

University president Alan Wildeman told Francis the school's new engineering facility took four years to come to fruition.

Francis told CBC News he will not wait another four years for the redevelopment of the armouries and noted St. Clair College's speedy construction of its downtown MediaPlex campus.

Francis said the city core needs economic diversity and expected the university to have shovels in the ground by now.
