Leamington hospital to keep obstetrics unit open

Women will continue to give birth at Leamington District Memorial Hospital, after the Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network approved a recommendation to create a new model to deliver birthing services at the facility.

Women will continue to give birth at Leamington District Memorial Hospital, after the Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network approved a recommendation to create a new model to deliver birthing services at the facility.

The hospital will create a so-called navigation centre, which will offer obstetric and additional services to expectant mothers.

The new model is contingent on the province providing one-time funding for rehab beds.

The obstetrics unit had been slated to close, which led to an outcry from the community that forced the LHIN to look at ways of keeping it open.

An expert panel had previously issued a report recommending that the obstetrics unit stay open and thousands of people had signed a petition calling on the LHIN to keep the unit in operation.

The LHIN's board of directors had been supportive of the plan laid out by the expert panel. But it did not make a final decision on the matter until Tuesday.
