Kingsville could be voting online, by phone in 2014

The Town of Kingsville is considering using electronic voting in the next municipal election in 2014.

The Town of Kingsville is considering using electronic voting in the next municipal election, scheduled for 2014.

In the past few elections, a mail-in system was used. Town staff are about to survey citizens about a new way of voting.

Mayor Nelson Santos says council is considering moving to online voting or voting by telephone.

"By looking at internet voting [and] voting by telephone from home, we're looking to see if there are any concerns or hurdles that our residents would have, or any reservations about going to that  type of process," Santos said.

Santos says the idea is to encourage more people to participate.

Voting by mail has been successful. In each of the past three elections, the voter turnout was more than 50 per cent.

"We're always trying to engage the public and see if we can raise that number even higher as we get into the next election for municipal seats," Santos said.

Santos says the survey will be done over the summer.

If there are going to be any changes, council wants them approved and in place well ahead of the 2014 municipal election.
