Former NHLer Mio out of mayoral race

Former NHL hockey player Eddie Mio announced Friday morning he would not run for Mayor of Windsor, despite having said he wanted to lead his hometown.

Former NHL hockey player Eddie Mio will not run for Mayor of Windsor.

Mio made the announcement Friday morning.

The former goaltender had said publicly earlier in the week that he was considering challenging Mayor Eddie Francis for the leadership of Mio's hometown in the municipal election to be held Oct. 25.

"After much thought and consideration, I have decided not to run for mayor," said Mio.

"But I believe that a majority of this community wants to see Mr. Francis gone and I am concerned that by me running I will split that majority of that vote and that will ensure Francis to be re-elected."

Mio publicly threw his support behind former Windsor city councillor Rick Limoges, who has announced his candidacy for mayor.

Candidates for municipal election had until 2 p.m. Friday to submit or withdraw their nominations.

As of midday there were six people running for the position of mayor of Windsor.
