A customer shot an alleged, gun-toting bank robber in suburban Detroit on Monday afternoon, police say.

Police Sgt. Francis Smith told CBC News that a man with a gun walked into the Citizens Bank on Van Dyke Road, in Warren, Mich., about 20 kilometres north of Detroit, just after 4 p.m. ET.

Smith said the man was handed money.

A customer inside the bank had a licence to carry a concealed weapon. Smith said that person feared for his life and fired shots at the bank robber.

The bank robber was hit in the shoulder, arm and knee. Smith said he was taken to hospital in serious condition.
