Patrick Burke — son of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke — discusses some of the issues facing gay athletes, including the experiences of his brother, Brendan, who was killed in a car accident in 2010.

In an interview with CBC News, Burke said the onus is on the athletic community as a whole to make sure gay players feel safe if they make their sexual orientation known.

Brendan Burke, who was involved in college hockey in the United States, drew attention to the challenges facing homosexual athletes after publicly declaring that he was gay.
