Tyrell Dueck loses battle against cancer
Tyrell Dueck, the 13-year-old boy from Martensville, Sask., who tried to fight cancer his own way has died.
Dueck died Wednesday night in a hospital in nearby Saskatoon after a very public battle with cancer.
Dueck and his family refused conventional cancer treatments including chemotherapy and amputation to treat a tumour on his leg. The family wanted to explore alternative treatments.
Saskatchewan Social Services tried to take legal charge of his medical care.
But the province gave up the fight after doctor's found that the cancer had spread to his lungs. Doctors said there was nothing else they could do to save him
Instead, Dueck and his family went to Mexico, where the boy was treated at at a clinic in Tijuana.
After coming back to Canada his mother said he was getting better, although he was still in a lot of pain.
Dueck's case sparked an ethical debate over alternative medicine.
