Trudeau son killed in avalanche

A man missing and presumed dead in Kokanee Glacier Park is the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

Police say 23-year-old Michel Trudeau was skiing with friends when an avalanche swept him into a lake known as Kokanee Lake.

He is presumed to have drowned.

Efforts to recover the body are being hampered by weather conditions.

Five others from the group were rescued earlier today.

The family has been told about the accident.

Prime Minster Jean Chretien has spoken by phone from Malaysia with former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to offer condolences.

Trudeau had visited the area earlier this year with his father and his brother. Michel had worked as a ski lift attendant at Red Mountain, in nearby Rossland, last winter.
