An 11-year-old boy has died in hospital after he was pulled from a storm management pond in Milton, Halton police say.

Police said the incident began when two young boys ventured onto ice at a storm management pond off Reece Court, near Derry and Tremaine Roads.

Both boys fell through the thin ice but one was able to remove himself after trying to help the other boy, police said. The child immediately ran to a neighbouring home for help.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at about 2:30 p.m.

Halton police officers, firefighters and paramedics searched the pond and located the boy after 15 minutes.

Police said the boy died shortly after 4 p.m., despite the attempts to save his life by emergency crews and the Milton District Hospital Emergency Medical Unit.

Police have asked that the boy's family be granted privacy at this time.

Police said its investigators will continue looking into the incident.

Members of the public are reminded to stay off the ice on bodies of water at this time because it is not thick enough to support weight.
