Women warned of prowler in midtown Toronto

Police are warning women of a prowler who is breaking into apartments just west of midtown Toronto.

Women are being warned of a prowler who is breaking into apartments in midtown Toronto.

Police said there have been a number of break-ins at women's apartments in the past six months in an area bounded by Lawrence Avenue West to the north, Bathurst Street to the east, Eglinton Avenue West to the south and Allen Road to the west.

Police say the prowler targets homes where single women are living during the early morning and takes electronic equipment, cash, and items of "a sexual nature."

"We're classifying them (break-ins) as a potential sex offender," said Toronto police constable Victor Kwong.

Police suggest that residents take precautions including ensuring that all windows and doors are properly locked.

"Right now the main focus is to make sure you have your doors locked and have your windows secured while you're sleeping," Kwong said.

Indeed, the news has residents on edge.

"People are nervous. More concerned about people breaking-in and having things stolen. But now they're more worried, because the guy sounds like he's a bit of a creep," said Elly Ebin, who lives in the area.
