A woman accused along with her husband of forcing her mother-in-law to live in an icy garage at the couple's home has been released from custody following a bail hearing.

Qi Tan was freed on $100,000 bail.

Tan and her husband Kwong Yan are charged with failing to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Police and paramedics were called Feb. 23 to a home on Marrakesh Drive in east Toronto, where they found a 68-year-old woman unconscious and suffering from frostbite.

She was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

The evidence presented during the bail hearing can't be reported due to a court-ordered publication ban.
