VIDEO: Fire destroys Markham home
An elderly man has been hospitalized after his Markham home was destroyed in a blaze now being investigated by the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal.
An elderly man was hospitalized after his Markham home was destroyed in a blaze early Tuesday.
Fire crews called to Colonsay Road near Yonge Street and Highway 407 around 2:30 a.m. ET found the basement and a vehicle in a driveway consumed by flames. Flames could be seen from several kilometres away on Highway 407.
"The one occupant of the home ... made it out safely. [He] had some minor smoke inhalation, [and] has been transported to hospital," said John Preiss, acting platoon chief for Markham Fire Services. "The house is fully destroyed."
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating.
