Urban farm near Jane and Finch to receive $400,000 grant
Eight-acre Black Creek Community Farm a source of local food for community
An eight-acre community farm near Jane and Finch is set to receive a $400,000 grant from The W. Garfield Weston Foundation later today.
The Black Creek Community Farm occupies a previously unused plot of land that includes a heritage farmhouse as well as a barn, and has been used by community members to grow their own food.
"When you walk in this place is just a nice conclave of old trees, and plants and bush that nobody would ever think there’s a farm sitting there," Jacqueline Dwyer told Metro Morning host Matt Galloway, describing the farm that's at the corner of Jane Street and Steeles Avenue West.
"When I knew that the farm existed there I knew this is going to be an exciting project and something very phenomenal in the sense that Jane and Finch is always getting a bad rap."
The long-time Black Creek community member said local farmers recently harvested everything from tomatoes to eggplant and "everybody that ate that food wants more next year.
"Now that we have a place that can grow good food I think it is something great to get involved in," Dwyer said.
