Tugboat fire on Lake Ontario injures 6 crew members
One crew member is in a Toronto hospital with severe burns and five others were injured after a fire on a Lake Ontario tugboat Tuesday morning.
The fire broke out on the Patrice McAllister about 10 kilometres southwest of Kingston, Ont. One crew member was seriously burned and taken to Toronto by helicopter. The other five crew members suffered injuries ranging from minor burns to smoke inhalation.
The 32-metre boat was en route from Toledo, Ohio, to a New York port when a fire broke out in the engine room.
The crew members, all U.S. citizens, worked to put out the fire with help from the built-in fire suppression system.
The burned crew member is in Sunnybrook Hospital. The rest of the crew was treated in Kingston.
A U.S. vessel is on its way to retrieve the disabled tug. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating.
