An drive-by shooting in Rexdale late Monday has left a visiting U.S. medical student and two other men in hospital.

Police received reports of gunfire in the area of Dixon Road and Skyway Avenue and arrived at the scene at 10:20 p.m. to find three men sitting in a sedan with injuries.

"The victims were driving and stopped at a red light. A vehicle pulled up beside them and basically opened fire and shot them," said Toronto police Supt. Ron Taverner.

None of the three victims are known to police, and investigators are looking into whether they were the intended targets of the attack. Two were transported on an emergency run to trauma centres, while the third was taken to a local hospital for treatment. As of Tuesday morning, all three were in stable condition.

Taverner added that the intersection where the shooting occurred was not in view of any security cameras, as far as police are aware. He asked that anyone who might have potentially valuable information contact police.

"We have no description of the vehicle and no descriptions of suspect(s) at this time," he told CBC Toronto.
