Paramedics initially reported that the girl had suffered severe head trauma and that she had life threatening injuries. The girl was later pronounced dead at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, said Const. Clint Stibbe of the Toronto police.

Stibbe told reporters that the vehicle had been travelling southbound on McRae Road and was making a left-hand turn onto Millwood Road when it hit the child.

The girl was alone at the time of the collision, but her mother "was in the area," Stibbe said.

He said investigators have spoken with the driver, a 50-year-old man, and are still working to determine the cause of the fatal collision.

No charges have been laid in the incident.

Area residents say that more drivers take McCrae Road to avoid lane restrictions on Eglinton Avenue. and that with the emergence of more big box stores the area has gotten busier.

“It’s crazy, everyone’s zipping through the lights, trying to bypass and get going on the way,” said Melissa Gracey.

Coun. John Parker expressed his condolences Wednesday.

“We will find out what happened and how it happened and right now our thoughts are with the family,” he said.
