Toronto police are investigating after shots were fired in the area of Jane Street and Driftwood Avenue on Tuesday evening.

Police were already in the area when shots rang out in the north-end neighbourhood at about 9:30 p.m., and early reports indicated the officers themselves were under fire.

Police later said the plainclothes officers were there for an unrelated investigation and were not targeted.

"They just happened to be in the area at the time," said Sgt. Dave Haynes.

Investigators are looking for three male suspects, who are considered armed and dangerous. A heavy police converged on the area Tuesday evening and included the Major Crimes Unit, a canine unit and a helicopter.

Police have not released a description of the suspects.

Haynes said the search is expected to last until after midnight, but that the neighbourhood is now considered safe.
