Toronto police have confirmed that the remains found on the side of a highway during Tuesday's rush hour are not human.

Const. Tony Vella told CBC News the remains are from a pig.

Police were called at about 5:30 p.m. to the Gardiner Expressway in the city's west end after a motorist reportedly saw what appeared to be remains.

Staff Sgt. William Hurley said earlier the Coroner's office would make the final determination as to whether the remains were human or animal.

Westbound lanes of the expressway were closed just after 7 p.m. as police searched for remains.

Const. Allan Davidson says once police completed the investigation, the expressway remained closed because of a collision.
