Penrose Fish & Chips closing after six decades of business

If you've been putting off taking a trip to Penrose Fish and Chips, it's time to stop procrastinating.

The well-known restaurant on Mount Pleasant Road is set to close its doors in early October.

It first opened in 1950, back when Louis St-Laurent was the prime minister.

Sixty-four years and 10 prime ministers later, it's the end of the road for the classic fish-and-chips spot that Coun. Josh Matlow describes as a "deeply beloved midtown institution."

The restaurant's website says that it was started by Roly and Marion Johnston.

Their son, Dave and his wife, Rosemary, run it today. But they have decided to retire.

A banner in the window tells passerby about the fact their last week will be Oct. 5 to 10.

"After 64 years in the kitchen we are wrapping up our memories and Going Fishin'," it reads. "From our family to yours, we thank you!"
