6 men facing 63 charges in alleged theft of nearly $7M in cellphones, tablets

Six men are facing a total of 63 charges after police say nearly $7 million in cellphones and tablets was stolen from a delivery truck in Brampton earlier this year.

Six men are facing a total of 63 charges after police say nearly $7 million in cellphones and tablets was stolen from a delivery truck in Brampton earlier this year.

According to Peel Regional Police, a delivery truck was driving in the area of Steeles Avenue East and Goreway Drive in March of 2019 when it was hijacked by two suspects armed with a handgun. They drove the truck to an industrial plaza near Clark Boulevard and Summerlea Road, Peel police said in a news release, and loaded the cargo into a waiting truck before driving off.

The driver of the delivery truck was then able to call police.

Investigators, working with businesses affected by the theft, were able to identify a group of suspects. They arrested a total of six men with the help of several agencies, including the Canada Border Services Agency, Halton Regional Police and the Barrie Police Service.

The charges break down as follows:

  • A 45-year-old Mississauga man is charged with robbery, kidnapping and using an imitation firearm while committing an offence.
  • A 47-year-old Brampton man is facing 21 charges, including robbery, kidnapping, using an imitation firearm while committing an offence, two counts of robbery with a firearm, five counts of theft of a motor vehicle, four counts of breach of recognizance, operating a motor vehicle while prohibited, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded restricted firearm, occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm, tampering with a serial number and two counts of theft under $5,000.
  • A 49-year-old Toronto man is charged with robbery with a firearm, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded restricted firearm, occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm, tampering with a serial number and three counts of theft of a motor vehicle.
  • A 50-year-old Brampton man is charged with robbery, kidnapping and using an imitation firearm while committing an offence.
  • A 61-year-old Brampton man is facing 17 charges, including robbery, kidnapping, using an imitation firearm while committing an offence, operating a motor vehicle while prohibited, two counts of robbery with a firearm, five counts of theft of a motor vehicle, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded restricted firearm, occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm, tampering with a serial number of a firearm, two counts of theft under $5,000.
  • A 75-year-old Toronto man is charged with robbery with a firearm, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded restricted firearm, occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm, tampering with the serial number of a firearm, three counts of theft of a motor vehicle, theft under $5,000 and breach of recognizance.

The accused appeared in Brampton court in August and September, police said in a news release.

"Investigators believe that this group of individuals may have committed similar violent crimes in the past," the release said. "The individuals have ties to communities throughout eastern and western Canada."

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call police or Crime Stoppers.
