Ontario's Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating a fatal fire in Ajax, Ont. that occurred early Sunday.

Paul Ritchie, platoon chief at Ajax Fire and Emergency Services, said firefighters was called to a home on Abraham Court, near Rossland Road East and Audley Road, shortly at 1:37 a.m. for a report of a possible structural fire.

The fire left one person dead. The sex and age of the victim was not released.

Ritchie said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Fire was put out 'fairly quickly'

"There was evidence, after being on scene, that there was a fatality at the fire," Ritchie said.

Earlier, Ajax and Fire and Emergency Services said firefighters found the back deck of the house on fire when they arrived on the scene. Ritchie said he could not confirm that.

He said about 12 firefighters, with the help of three trucks, were able to put fire "fairly quickly."

Ritchie could not say where the fire started. No estimate of damage was available.

The Office of the Fire Marshal is called on to investigate any fire that results in fatality, serious injuries or involves over $500,000 worth of loss.
