A man in his 20s is in serious but stable condition after an early morning shootout on Friday.

It happened around 12:40 a.m. on Varna Drive in the Lawrence Heights area.

The man was shot several times, including once in the chest, and taken to Sunnybrook Hospital.

Police say more than one gun was involved and there were many young men in the area when the gunfight broke out.

The shooting happened in a courtyard surrounded by townhouses.

Donna, who has lived in the area for more than 30 years, was awakened by the sound of two gunshots.

"It woke me right up out of my sleep," she told CBC News. "I picked up the phone, went to the window, and heard three more shots."

Police have recovered a handgun at the scene. No arrests have been made.
