Kijiji iPhone ads lured robbery victims to Scarborough
Police say sellers used fake emails and phone numbers
A series of people interested in buying a new iPhone headed out to an address in Scarborough last month, only to be robbed, Toronto police say.
Police say that ads appeared on Kijiji offering a new iPhone for sale. Interested buyers were instructed to head to an address on Guildcrest Drive, near Scarborough Golf Club Road and Kingston Road. Buyers were then robbed of their belongings when they arrived, police say.
It is alleged that the sellers used fake email and phone numbers when communicating with buyers.
A police news release indicates four alleged thefts or robberies have been investigated so far. But police believe there may be more alleged victims.
Police have made two arrests — one in December and one this week. Both of the accused are 17-year-old males. Each has been charged with two counts of robbery and five counts of theft under $5,000.
None of the charges have been proven in court.
