Firefighters free worker who was trapped under crane

A worker in East Gwillimbury was trapped under a crane for two hours on Thursday, until he was freed by York Region firefighters.

A worker in East Gwillimbury was trapped under a crane for two hours on Thursday.

Just after 6:05 p.m., police received a 911 call about an emergency in the area of Concession Road 2 and Queensville Side Road, said Sgt. Darrin Leitch of the York Regional Police.

He said the worker became trapped after the crane the man was operating toppled over. 

Firefighters were able to free the man after a two-hour rescue effort., Leitch said.

He said paramedics airlifted the crane operator, who is around 50 years old, to hospital at 8:08 p.m.

The worker suffered a broken arm in the ordeal and is in stable condition, Leitch said.

Ontario's Ministry of Labour has been called in to investigate the incident.
