Man in his 20s drowns in backyard pool in Newmarket

A man in his 20s has drowned in a backyard pool in Newmarket. Police say the death is accidental and not considered suspicious. Police received a call about 6:00 a.m. on Sunday. (CBC)

York Regional Police say a man has drowned in a backyard swimming pool in Newmarket but the death is not considered suspicious.

Police said they received a call shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday about the drowning near Bristol Road and Elman Crescent in the area of Yonge Street and Green Lane East.  

The man, who didn't live at the residence, was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, they said. He is believed to be in his 20s.

Insp. Russ Bellman of York Regional Police said police are in the process of notifying next of kin. The victim's family lives outside Newmarket.

The coroner has said the drowning is considered accidental.
