A second eastbound lane of the Gardiner Expressway shut down last night for repairs, part of extensive repair work that will keep the lanes on the busy highway closed until December.

The work will be done between Jarvis Street and the Don Valley Parkway along the highway’s southern barrier wall.

One lane of the same stretch has been closed for months already.

Last year chunks of concrete from the Gardiner came crashing down onto Lake Shore Boulevard from the overhead expressway.

The city officials say they'll be in a better position to figure out what to do with the Gardiner once an environmental assessment is completed, but that could take more than five years.

Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong, the chair of the city's public works and infrastructure, recognizes that the construction may frustrate motorists, but it is work that needs to be done.

"There is an end in sight and hopefully when it’s all done, people will appreciate that," Minnan-Wong told CBC News in an interview on Wednesday.
