Toronto Fire officials said no smoke alarm was found anywhere in the Gerrard Street home where a two-alarm fire claimed one man’s life on Monday night.

Emergency responders were called to the scene near Gerrard St. E. and Greenwood Ave. just after 8 p.m. Fourteen fire trucks and 55 firefighters were part of the response after smoke was spotted pouring out of the rear of a semi-detached house.

The victim, who hasn’t been identified, was found near an exit.

"He was outside of the building … right outside the door," Trotter told CBC News.

Trotter said investigators are trying to figure out what caused the deadly fire, but it appears the blaze may have stared in the kitchen.

The Ontario Fire Marshal was called to the scene and will continue the investigation.
