Smoking materials caused fatal blaze: Fire Marshal
Investigators believe smoking materials were the likely cause of a fatal fire in Thunder Bay on the weekend, according to a preliminary report from the Office of the Fire Marshal.
The identity of the man who firefighters pulled from a burning apartment at 321 Hodder Ave. on Saturday night has not been released. A post-mortem examination determined the man succumbed to smoke inhalation. Firefighters had attempted unsuccessfully to resuscitate him at the scene.
The Director of Prevention for the Thunder Bay Fire Service, Brian Berringer, said fire crews put out the blaze before it could spread to the four other apartments in the building.
All the other occupants got out safely.
There was heavy fire damage in the deceased man's apartment and smoke damage in the rest of the units.
