Nipigon house fire leaves 2 people dead

A house fire in a small community 114 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay has killed two people who have been identified as the homeowners.

Identities of homeowners killed being withheld by police as investigation continues

The Ontario Provincial Police said they are notifying next of kin before releasing the names of the two people killed in the fire.

Two people died early Sunday morning in a house fire in Nipigon, a small community 114 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have identified the victims as the homeowners, but their names are being withheld until next of kin can be notified.

Nipigon firefighters at the scene were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to other properties. The house endured substantial damage due to smoke and flames. 

As of late Monday afternoon, the OPP were at the scene with the Office of the Fire Marshal conducting an investigation into what happened.
