Grace Milne, 56, was pulled in by the current on Whitefish River near Sudbury

A post mortem will be held today for 56-year-old greater Sudbury woman who died trying to save her dog.

Espanola OPP report Grace Milne fell into the Whitefish River on Saturday while trying to rescue her dog after it chased a ball into the river on Saturday afternoon.

Officers, along with EMS, Fire Department and members from the North Shore Search and Rescue attended the scene.

Milne was located a short time later by an OPP helicopter and — with the assistance and the use of a civilian’s boat — she was retrieved from the water.  Milne was taken by land ambulance to Espanola Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators said as Milne attempted to rescue her dog, she laid down to reach for the animal, fell in the current and — within a few seconds — was submerged.

Police are reminding the public of the dangers of cold fast flowing water at this time of year.
