Two people dead after shooting in Sturgeon Falls

The Special Investigations Unit is now involved after a shooting near Sturgeon Falls, Ont. West Nipissing Police and the OPP were called to Leblanc Road Sunday evening after a shooting.

OPP say two people are dead after an incident involving gunfire Sunday night near Sturgeon Falls.

According to a statement released by the Special Investigations Unit, preliminary evidence indicates officers responded to a 911 call shortly after 8:00 p.m.. The caller told police she heard shots fired on her property in the area of Drive In Road and Leblanc Road.

The SIU says OPP and West Nipissing officers responded and interacted with a 46 year-old man, who fled into the woods. His body was found hours later. He had suffered a gunshot wound.

The S-I-U is investigating the interaction between police and and that man.

A 59-year-old woman was transported to hospital where she is being treated for critical injuries, OPP said.

Police said another person, in addition to the 46 year-old, is also deceased.

OPP and West Nipissing Police say they are investigating a homicide

The OPP had Highway 17 closed, between Drive In Road and Leblanc Road, for more than five hours overnight, but it reopened around 4:30 a.m. Monday.
