There's been an explosion at the sports complex in Echo Bay, located about a half an hour east of Sault. Ste. Marie.

Provincial police report it happened at 5 a.m.

Union Gas responded and said a heater caught fire on the roof of the sports complex and caused the explosion.

The utility said the gas has been turned off to the building and there is no risk to the public.

Police said they don't believe there are any injuries, but the building sustained major damages.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is expected to investigate the matter, police said.

The explosion collapsed rooms inside the Echo Bay sports complex and the fire destroyed the ice resurfacing machine. (Echo Bay Township/Supplied)
