Federal budget results in cuts to northeastern Ontario reserve support unit

The new federal budget is resulting in layoffs in northern Ontario.

Kevin McNama is the local president of the Union of National Defence Employees.

He said, so far, 22 National Defence employees have lost their jobs  — 16 in North Bay and six in Sault Ste. Marie.

McNama said one area support unit is closing in the northeast, which resulted in the job cuts.

"The area support unit was … here to support the reserves," he said. "With this closing, we don't know what's going to be happening. We do know that some of these functions are going to be downloaded to the reserves themselves. But right now, we don't have all the details."

McNama said more cuts are coming to the Department of National Defence.

He said he's not sure what the future cuts will mean for northeastern Ontario.
