Stockwell Day supports Manning's leadership

Alberta Treasurer Stockwell Day says Preston Manning's threat to resign his leadership position if the United Alternative movement doesn't go ahead, is a "gutsy" move.

Day says it shows how committed the Reform leader is to taking the party into the future.

The United Alternative would unite Reformers and Conservatives in one party.

Day has been considered a possible leadership candidate if the United Alternative goes ahead. But he says he's not thinking about that right now.

Day says he supports Manning's leadership and thinks the United Alternative movement is headed in the right direction.

"With Preston's announcement, I think that's just raised the interest level unquestionably," Day told CBC Radio News.

Day will be one of the speakers at the United Alternative convention, which will be held in Ottawa at the end of the month.

He believes Reform Party members will eventually approve of the plan to unite the right.
