The Executive Director of SaskMusic has died.

Derek Bachman had been a mainstay in Saskatchewan's music community for almost 20 years.

He took the reins of the province's recording industry association in April.

"I don't think there was anyone like him in the province here," said Lorena Kelly, Communications and Operations Manager of SaskMusic.

"Long before he started working at SaskMusic, he was doing his thing, helping out bands and acting as a mentor."

Bachman was an important part of bringing high profile events like the Juno Awards and the Western Canadian Music Awards to the province.

He was also responsible for showcasing Saskatchewan artists on the world stage.

Bachman died this morning after a brief illness.
