Saskatoon police have arrested and charged a man, 39, with arson in connection with a house fire in the Mayfair neighbourhood Tuesday morning.

Crews called to the 1800 block of Avenue D N. at around 8:30 a.m. saw heavy smoke coming out of the lower level of a fourplex.

Firefighters sprayed down the outside of the building before going inside and used an electric fan to blow the remaining smoke outside.

No one was inside the house at the time.

'It's getting so bad'

Mayfair resident Christina Feist said she wasn't surprised to hear the sirens.

"We were like, 'there we go, probably another house on fire,'" Feist said. "People don't really want to live in this neighbourhood, it's getting so bad."

Feist said this isn't the first fire in the neighbourhood recently and it's common to see police on the street.

The fourplex where the fire occurred also has a negative reputation, Feist said.

It's not the first time this address has been in the news — one person was killed in a fire at the same location in 2012.
