An early morning fire behind a Riversdale business blanketed the neighbourhood with thick smoke.

Crews were called to Avenue H and 16th Street just after 5 a.m CST. They arrived to find a stack of appliances, mattresses and furniture on fire against the wall of the Riversdale Beauty Salon and a tattoo parlor.

They closed off a section of street and attacked the fire, getting the scene under control in about 20 minutes.

The fire department said a bit of the fire extended into the building but crews stopped it quickly enough to prevent any damage. There were no apparent injuries.

A fire investigator called to the scene said the blaze appeared to be incendiary in nature. Damage is estimated to be $10,000.
